Horizontal Directional Drilling is the most economical method for the trenchless new installation of wastewater pipes, especially when rehabilitation of the old pipe is no longer possible or uneconomical. Horizontal drilling is the ideal solution in two main scenarios. First, when your old sewer pipe is so badly damaged that trenchless rehabilitation (such as CIPP lining) is no longer technically possible or economically viable. Second, when a completely new sewer connection has to be created, e.g. for a new building, and the pipe route has to pass underneath surfaces such as gardens, driveways or existing buildings.
The most important requirement is sufficient space in the ground. Since we work precisely and safely, legal safety distances from other existing lines, such as electricity or gas pipes, must be maintained. Our experts therefore always check the exact circumstances first as part of an on-site analysis. As soon as the new, separate pipe has been installed by horizontal drilling, the old, defective pipe is no longer needed. This prevents any risk of the ground collapsing or subsiding later on.
CIPP lining repairs and renews the existing pipe from the inside. It is a “pipe-in-pipe” method. Horizontal drilling, on the other hand, does not use the old pipe at all. Instead, a completely new, independent pipe route is created underground. This is always the necessary solution when the old route is unsuitable or the damage is too severe for rehabilitation from the inside.
